MAKE TIME TO DO WHAT MAKES YOUR SOUL HAPPY EVERY DAY
Do you find it hard to sit and meditate? Are you too fidgety, get bored, or just don't seem to be able to "do it". It's ok, I get it, and good news, there is another way! There are actually many other ways. Sometimes we need to move, shake things out, and be "in our bodies" to get "out of our minds". This is how an active practice of yoga prepares the mind for the rest of Savasana.
This is how dance allows us to access our intuition.
How riding a bike or walking can feel meditative.
And then there is the practice of art, for the process of art, not the product. Creative expression allows communication to enter the rational mind from the emotional & intuitive wisdom we all hold within our physical and energetic bodies.
Intuitive Arts are simple and powerful practices that tap powerfully into your creative genius and allow you to express yourself authentically. They are moving meditations, and very effective for people who struggle to sit still and meditate. By allowing your body to move and flow, you can enter into a meditative state easily and often by accident without feeling pressured to sit still, wrestle your rational mind, and watch the clock.
Two powerful practices for this transformative work are
Intuitive Painting and Dancing with Intention
INTUITIVE PAINTING
I believe that art is a divine gift of expression, that each of us possesses. Often we have limiting beliefs around what it means to make "good art". This practice is not about making a beautiful painting, it is about the PROCESS of painting. I am going to say that again. It is not about making good art, it is about the process of making art. See the difference? It is about tuning in to what colors, shapes, and forms are appealing to you at a particular moment in time, about playing with and experiencing colors. It is a practice of opening to listening to your intuition and expressing yourself without fear of judgement or hesitation. This process takes some time to master, we are conditioned to focus on an end product, and being judged. If you practice Intuitive Painting with intention, it will reveal deep truths and powerful core beliefs to you in a way that is safe, supportive, private or in community and freeing. The creative inside you knows the truth, and what needs to be seen, expressed, or raised into your awareness - this changes moment to moment, day to day. Depending on your moon cycle or what is happening in your life. Sometimes when painting, you will feel joy, playfulness, and practice feeling expansive, free and unlimited. Other times, when you pick up the brush, you may find yourself expressing frustrations, worry, sadness or brings into your awareness something that needs your conscious minds acknowledgement to be seen, healed and released.
Any form of movement can be meditative, even walking for example. Where the ART piece makes a difference, is that it allows us to not only quiet the mind, but taps into our deep, inner wisdom, and allows it to be expressed on paper (I teach this concept with paint, but it can be applied to any art medium that appeals to you, clay, drawing, etc). This additional step in meditation of creating a piece of artwork, I have found helps us to use the information that is often hidden in our subconscious minds, or held back by some limiting belief. It is ok for it to be messy, or not socially acceptable, because the process is free from judgement, and does not need to make rational sense, it simply is an expression in colors & shapes. By getting these thoughts, emotions and feelings out into the world, through art, we can begin to work with them, hear our own inner wisdom in a profound way, and transform our conscious thinking to inform the choices we make. And sometimes it is just fun!
DANCING WITH INTENTION
When you dance as a form of moving meditation, it is a VERY similar practice. Instead of the expression using the modality of a paintbrush, you use your body. The practice is allowing yourself to be immersed in the music which quiets your thinking mind and leads you into a state of full body awareness. It is a practice of honoring your physical body, listening to its wisdom and allowing it to move as it needs and wants to. The body holds valuable insights, emotions and information at a cellular level. This practice, done with intention, reveals the bodies inner wisdom which can then inform or guide the conscious mind and release stored emotions that no longer serve us.
We practice in community and share our intentions and experiences to anchor our experiences.
This practice is coming soon in an on line format so we can expand our circle of dancers!! Stay tuned. I am so excited to share it with you!
Currently I lead Dancing with Intention Classes at Heaven Meets Earth on an intermittent basis (see class schedule).
Intuitive Painting Classes are scheduled currently for small groups, and held periodically at local studios, check the schedule here.
